Health insurance for a Maine business with 1 to 50 employees: the options

Christopher York, licensed Maine health insurance producer · October 2026

A business with a few employees has three ways to handle health coverage. Each fits a different situation.

A small-group plan

Maine's carriers offer group plans for 1 to 50 employees. You choose what share of the employee premium to pay (50% to 100% is common); family coverage can be employee-paid. We quote every carrier for your employees' ages and ZIP codes; no names needed for the quote.

The tax credit

Employers with fewer than 25 full-time-equivalent employees at lower average wages may qualify for a federal credit on what they contribute, when buying through the SHOP route. We check whether you are in range; your preparer claims it.

Individual coverage with savings

Sometimes the best answer for a two-person shop is for each person to buy on CoverME.gov with income-based savings. We run both and show you the numbers side by side.

The comparison comes back within a week. Send your employee count and we call you.
